Outside the city, you will find gorgeous forests and coastal areas, and many other exciting ways to experience nature. You can visit Manchester State Forest, one of many pieces of the Palmetto Trail, which connects the mountains of western South Carolina to the sunny beaches of the east. Right next door is Poinsettia State Park, known all over the state for its scenic horseback riding trails.

To the northeast of the city, Francis Marion National Forest awaits you. Named for a Revolutionary War hero, this protected wilderness is a series of subtropical coniferous forests and wetlands containing ATV trails, boat ramps for lake access, fishing spots, mountain biking trails, and even a gun range.

You can also head up towards Columbia, the capital of South Carolina, and visit Congaree National Park, one of the few lying east of the Mississippi River. This ancient old-growth forest containing Cypress trees and many others surrounds the Congaree River, and features a winding boardwalk zig-zagging through the majestic marshy woodlands. Congaree River also attracts many kayakers who seek to encounter stunning scenery from the comfort of their boats.

City Sightseeing

Charleston itself has so much to offer those that choose to visit this colonial city and enjoy its beauty. History lovers will find it irresistible as they navigate the tiny cobblestone streets and visiting the famous “Battery” lined with cannons, antique buildings, and plaques commemorating great events and providing information on notable landmarks, statues, and other areas of historical importance.
