Clear blue Southern California skies fade to seaside sunsets and stargazing. Rent an RV in San Diego, and take advantage of the weather in one of the sunniest places in the United States. Coupled with its beachfront location, San Diego is the envy of most cities in the Lower 48.

Once the site of the US Navy Pacific Command Center, San Diego is now more of a resort city complete with an oceanarium (SeaWorld), a safari park, spa resorts, laid-back beaches, wineries, and whale-watching opportunities.

From San Diego, you can reach Tijuana, Mexico, in half an hour's drive, and the beachy surfing destination of Oceanside is just a quick trip up the coast. Hop on the Pacific Coast Highway (US Route 1) just an hour's drive north of the city for a scenic, multi-day road trip to San Francisco.

Embark on a brief ocean cruise to Catalina Island for a day filled with adventures or tropical tranquility (or both). Ziplines, glass-bottom boat rides, and food and beverage sampling can pack up the trip itinerary, or visitors can find a spot on the soft sand of Descanso Beach and settle in for a day of sun, snoozing, and maybe a little snorkeling.

The Great Outdoors

San Diego's ocean-facing outlook means that you'll likely spend more time in and on the water than you will on land. The city is blessed with 70 miles of glorious coastline perfect not only for surfing but also for cycling, viewing marine wildlife, and simply escaping the city crowd and contemplating.

For that unforgettable marine wildlife encounter, visit La Jolla Cove, where you can easily spot seals and sea lions. Head south and stop by the Cabrillo National Monument, about 12 miles southwest of the city. The site offers the best land-based vantage point to scope out migrating gray whales as they move south from Alaska to the lagoons of Baja, California, from December through mid-April.

Blue whales take their turn in the spring and summer months when they feed on massive quantities of krill in the Southern California waters. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, and finback, humpback, and minke whales joining the frenzy. To see these behemoths of the deep up close, book a boat tour.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is less than 20 miles north but still within the city limits. It's here that one of America's rarest trees still stand strong. Locals come here to walk their dogs on miles of untouched beaches while hikers look forward to the open trails winding through coastal valleys made of red rock.

Bird lovers might want to head south, close to the Mexican border. The sand dunes and salt marshes of the Border Field State Park 15 miles south of San Diego provide refuge to endangered birds, including the California least tern and the western snowy plover.

Inland beckons with hiking trails and ancient cave decorations that are the major visitor draw of the Anza-Borrego State Park. It's less than two hours' drive from San Diego and lies on the cusps of the great Colorado and Mojave deserts. Avid hikers who want to keep it close to the city should head for Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, which features a wild patchwork of grassy trails, fir forests, and wide peninsula peaks. Here the feeling of isolation is real despite it being less than an hour's drive out of the city. Park the San Diego camper rental at one of the Cuyamaca Ranchos RV campsites and explore for a day or two. While there are no full hookups, some campgrounds have dump stations.

RV Parks

The availability of campgrounds and RV parks in San Diego makes renting an RV a lot easier. From most San Diego RV camping sites, it's easy to connect to the city’s public transport system.

Stay close to the seals and sea lions without compromising access to downtown San Diego with an RV campsite at Santa Fe Park RV Resort or Mission Bay RV Resort, both less than ten miles from La Jolla Cove. Santa Fe Park RV Resort offers full hookups and plenty of swimming, fitness, and recreational facilities. A combination of the Coaster commuter train and the San Diego trolley can land you downtown.

Have the pup along for the ride? Mission Bay RV Resort can accommodate and also offers full hookups and a dump station. This San Diego RV park puts you within trolley-riding distance of many city attractions as well as beaches. SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, Legoland, Mission San Diego, and the Gaslamp Quarter are 30 minutes' drive away. Several gas stations and retail stores are within 15 minutes' drive.

Away from the coast but less than 20 minutes' drive from the city is the centrally located San Diego RV Resort, offering hookups for electricity, water, sewer, and cable TV. The RV park is steps away from the trolley, which can get you anywhere around town. Get on this "moving landmark" to get to the Old Town, the stadium, Balboa Park, and loads of shopping options.

Exploring the City

Hop on the bright red trolley to get to your downtown destination. The trolley is linked to the Coaster commuter train, which in turn connects with the Pacific Surfliner of Amtrak. Park the RV rental in San Diego or leave it at the RV park, and you can make the necessary connections to get oceanside.

For comics enthusiasts, San Diego is the place to be for Comic-Con. Plan your trip to San Diego around the second or third week of July and join throngs of comics fans at the San Diego Convention Center. Secure an RV rental for the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar, and you'll be on-site for some of the state's best amusements, with carnival rides, fantastic food, excellent exhibits, and spectacular ocean-front views.

There are countless reasons to visit Southern California at any time of the year, so start your search for an RV in San Diego County and get ready to hit the road.
