Meramec River is one of the main attractions of Castlewood State Park. With several miles of river access through the park, anglers get to spend their days casting a fishing line in the river’s well-populated waters. The Lower Meramec River is rich in spotted bass, channel catfish, flathead catfish, carp, drum, gar, walleye, crappie, bluegill, longear sunfish, and bass. A Missouri fishing license is required for fishing in Meramec River.

A concrete boat launch ramp provides access to the river, and small, light, non-motorized boats like kayaks, canoes, and small boats are preferred. There is a sand bar at the base of the ramp, and when the water levels rise, the ramp is closed. Check with the park office about boating regulations before you take your watercraft into the river.

The trails differ in length, and difficulty levels and a few of the more popular ones are the Al Foster Trail that covers 4.7 miles, Castlewood Loop that’s shorter at 2.75 miles, and Chubb Trail that is 6.5 miles long and perfect for hiking, biking, and horse riding. 

Bird watchers should not miss a visit to the World Bird Sanctuary located within the park and open on weekends. This sanctuary is home to a wide variety of live birds and several interpretive displays on birds of prey.
