Getting Outdoors

The park offers something for explorers, thrillseekers, history buffs, anglers, and families on vacation. First-timers typically go to see all the stone structures that were developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. These log and stone buildings are scattered throughout the park, so if you're going geocaching, hiking, or biking, you're bound to come across a few of them.

Guests who love observing wildlife will be busy for days here. At night, you're likely to spot bats while they're hunting for insects. Along the lakeshore, you might spot a moose. Packs of wolves and black bears lurk in the woods. Although a rare sight to behold, it’s not impossible to spot a lynx or a mountain lion, Commonly roaming about the park are woodland critters like raccoons. Concentrated around the lake are avian predators like eagles and hawks, as well as loons and winter ducks. In the forest area, you'll likely see ruffled grouse. This is just the tip of the iceberg, of course, as there are 225 bird species that either nest here or visit depending on the season.

If you're looking forward to this trip in order to fish, then make your way to the banks of the Gooseberry River. Rainbow trout is quite a frequent catch in these parts. If you're here during the early spring, set up camp at Gooseberry Falls State Park up the hill. This will make it easy for you to get to the pool near the falls, which is an ideal location for trout fishing.

Camping at Gooseberry Falls State Park

With over 60 RV campsites available at Gooseberry Falls State Park, there's more than enough space to go around. Unfortunately, there are no hookups here, so you'll have to use your generator for electricity and go to the visitors' center to get drinking water. Showers and bathrooms are available at the campground, and a dump station is located nearby.

There are a few picnic areas near the river and lake, and you can also reserve a picnic shelter in advance via phone. During winter, you can visit the trail center, which is also a part of the visitors' center, where you'll have access to a fireplace and vending machines.

Exploring the Area

Ready to call time on your motorhome camping trip at Gooseberry Falls State Park? You can find stores, gas stations, and restaurants in Two Harbours or Silver Bay. Should you find yourself in Two Harbors, you can take some time to visit Lighthouse Museum. This is one of the oldest operating lighthouses on Minnesota’s north shore, and it was first lit back in 1892. Almost 90 years later, in 1981, the light was fully automated, and thus the need for a lighthouse keeper was eliminated. The lighthouse also has a gift shop, which is a great place to grab a souvenir.

Other historic places in Two Harbors include 3M Birthplace and The Depot. 3M was founded by five businessmen as a part of their mining business venture. The idea behind it was to capitalize on the mineral-rich land and sell the corundum to grinding wheel manufacturers. However, things didn't work out as planned, as the mineral found in the area was anorthosite, not corundum. The Depot played a crucial role in the development of Minnesota's iron ore industry and the region as a whole. Today, the building is an administrative office for Lake County Historical Society.

When you've seen everything you want to see in the area, steer your camper rental southwest along Highway 61 toward Duluth to extend your road trip.
