Wyandotte County Lake Park was constructed in the 1930s during the Great Depression. It was created as a solution to two major problems at the time; unemployment and drought. Government officials believed that building a dam and an adjacent lake could provide jobs while solving the water shortage problem. There may have been a horse racing track where the lake is located (now at the bottom of the lake).

The park is home to the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame (more commonly known as the “Ag Center”). This center was issued a national charter by President Eisenhower, making it the national museum of agriculture. One of its exhibits is a plow once owned by president Harry Truman. RV camping near Wyandotte County Park will expose you to an ever-changing kaleidoscope of colors and imagery, from blooming trees and flowers in the spring to brilliant reds in the fall.

Discover Wyandotte County Park

Getting Outdoors

The park is open to the public year-round, from early morning until after sunset (call ahead to find out more specific times). Rent a motorhome near Wyandotte County Park, and you can enjoy several miles of trails that are specifically designated for equestrian riding and offer scenic views as they wind their way around the lake. There is a nature library you can check out which has exhibits and descriptions of the local wildlife; the area is a good place to enjoy bird watching or watching any of the resident animals; with luck, you may spot one of the park's many eagles.

If fishing is more your speed, the lake is stocked with rainbow trout and catfish; this is in addition to the crappie, smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye, and wiper that already inhabit the lake. There's a pond near Boathouse Cove where kids can fish too. Alternately, if you prefer to simply enjoy the scenery while you're out on the water, boating options on the lake include motor and pontoon boats, hand and wind-powered crafts, sailboards, and kayaks. Those who would rather enjoy the scenery from dry land can take an auto tour of the park (there is a road that encompasses the park).

There are some historical attractions within the park you might find interesting. One of these is a memorial to the Korean and Vietnam wars, and to the men and women who fought these wars. You'll also find an archery range where you can practice shooting a bow and arrow and numerous shelters throughout the park that can be booked. Bring your Kansas City camper rental along, and you can rest in comfort between your outdoor activities.

Camping at Wyandotte County Lake Park

You won't find any campsites in Wyandotte County Lake Park, but there are quite a few a short distance away. One of them, Walnut Grove RV Park, is open year-round and has amenities such as clean restrooms and hot showers, a dog park, and paved roads. As soon as you arrive with the motorhome rental, you can prepare for the days ahead by making use of their on-site laundry facilities; kids along for the ride can chill in the community center, which has hundreds of TV channels for them to choose from. Once you're set up and ready to start your vacation, Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop is one of the nearby historical attractions you can visit; another is the Shawnee Indian Mission, which includes a museum.

Another option is Suncatcher Lake & RV Resort, near Leavenworth. Many of the sites at this full-service RV park have some tree cover and full hookups. The park is nestled among rolling hills and next to Suncatcher Lake, where you can relax watching the ducks that congregate on the water. If you need something more adrenaline-inducing, Suncatcher is a short distance away from a local NASCAR raceway.

Exploring the Area

While you're enjoying Wyandotte County Park, you should also take the time to look around some other local venues. Bonner Springs is a pleasant town and hosts the Wyandotte County Historical Museum, which is a good starting point. The museum has a balance of permanent and temporary exhibitions that demonstrate the history of the area. It's also home to a renaissance festival, a public golf course, and a zipline recreation area. When dinner time rolls around, Bonner Springs has a selection of inexpensive and reasonably priced restaurants; you'll find Chinese, Mexican, and barbecue venues, pub and family restaurants, and much more.

Edwardsville is also a good destination for getting a bite to eat, with pizzerias and steakhouses and a balance of commercial and privately owned establishments. You can take some time to relax here while stocking up on supplies and gassing up your rig. When you're camping near Edwardsville, you can enjoy a delicious take-out dinner in the comfort of your rental RV or grab some groceries and enjoy a nice home-cooked meal.
