Getting Outdoors

The Chattahoochee Forest is split into four ranger districts: Blue Ridge, Chattooga River, Conasauga, and Oconee. While each has a very similar setup, there are some differences. If you have the time on this RV rental trip, visiting all four will ensure you get the most out of the forest.

One of the main allures to Chattahoochee National Forest is the hiking. There are well over 850 miles of trails that’ll weave you through the forest to all the must-see spots. Of those trails, some are designated for hiking while others for mountain biking or equestrian use. There will be ranging difficulty levels, but the views are outstanding.

A super neat fact about Chattahoochee is that there are 16 highlighted features found within the forest. There are others, but these are the most popular and definitely worth the trip. There are several scenic ventures like waterfalls, a lake, and outlooks. Drive your motorhome rental down the Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway, or if you have an off-road vehicle, there 10.5 miles of trails for you.

The Track Rock Petroglyphs are perhaps the most unique location of the group. Here, you can view ancient rock carvings of the area’s earliest ancestors. Some sort of roadway connects all these spots, so you don’t have to physically walk the many miles in between them.

The Chattooga River is the spot to cool off or up your adrenaline. There is plenty of shorelines to cast a line, throw down a towel, or head out on the water. Boat rentals are available, and tour companies will take you white water rafting if that’s on the to-do list.

Camping at Chattahoochee National Forest

Three of the four districts have RV-accessible campgrounds. Each varies in size, amenities, and what you see when you walk out your door. The developed campgrounds allow Chattahoochee National Forest campers access to water and electrical hookups, showers, and bathrooms. The recreation options available at your chosen campground will all depend on which district you’re in, not that it’s a far drive to the others.

In the off chance, all the campgrounds are filled to capacity, or you don’t feel like revolving the whole trip around the forest, there are plenty of campground choices in the surrounding towns of Blue Ridge and Blairsville. From rustic to full service, the choice is yours for the taking.

Exploring the Area
