Discover Atascadero

The Great Outdoors

Atascadero is situated near the northern edge of the massive Los Padres National Forest, a 1.75 million-acre stretch of mountains, rivers, forests and beaches sprawled across central and southern California. This park is really the true California experience. Redwood groves and towering peaks shoot up to cobalt skies, sometimes dotted with soaring bald eagles, California condors, and red-tailed hawks. Keep your eyes peeled for common large mammals like mule deer, bighorn sheep and over 460 other fish and wildlife species. Be aware, though, predators like mountain lions, California kingsnakes, and coyotes aren’t too uncommon out here, either. This park also offers over 300 miles of Big Sur hiking trails.

Another prime destination for Atascadero motorhome rentals is Morro Bay State Park. Carved over millions of years with the rocky handiwork of erosion and volcanic activity, this park features two of California’s Nine Sisters volcanic peaks, Black Hill and Cerro Cabrillo. It’s also almost impossible to miss the famous Morro Rock, which dominates the center of the bay. In addition to aquatic activities like sailing, fishing, and windsurfing, Morro Bay also has a number of pleasant hiking trails around the lagoon and saltmarsh. While you do that, though, be sure to keep an eye out for elephant seals; the bay is one of their breeding areas.

Other destinations for Atascadero RV rentals include the Santa Margarita Lake and Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area. At Santa Margarita Lake, take a jaunt around the outskirts of the lake, or paddle to the center by canoe or kayak. If you’re feeling more adventurous, try a hike in some of the nearby foothills, or go for a spin on one of the area’s many mountain biking trails. At Oceano on the other hand, you’ll find the only state park in all of California where visitors can drive vehicles on the beach. Get your buggy into gear, and zoom over these 1,500 acres of coastal dunes!

RV Parks

You’ll find no shortage of parks in this area once you rent an RV in Atascadero. If you have an Elks membership, for instance, you can actually stay in the city at Atascadero Elks Lodge #2733. They offer full hookups with 50 amp service and an on-site sewage station. About 20 minutes from Atascadero itself, you’ll find El Chorro Regional Park Campground, which has volleyball courts, a dog park, horseshoe pits and a barbeque. El Chorro has full hookups as well, with electricity, sewer, and water, and it’s also near the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden, as well as a number of hiking trails.

If you’re in the market for a more outdoorsy stay, have a look at the Cerro Alto Campground at Morro Bay. It’s in the middle of an oak, pine and sycamore forest about 1,000 miles above sea level, but still just a little ways off from the Bay itself. Other parks in the area include Morro Dunes RV Park and Harborview RV Park. There are also quite a few RV-friendly camping areas in Los Padres, although you might have a little more trouble finding all the amenities you might like there.

Exploring the City

In addition to these fantastic camping and hiking areas, there is no shortage of places to take your RV rental in Atascadero. For instance, be sure to check out the Charles Paddock Zoo. It’s the California Central Coast’s only zoo accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Home to hundreds of animal species housed over five wooded acres, the zoo is home to red pandas, Malaysian tigers, lemurs, and much, much more. In downtown Atascadero, on the other hand, you’ll find the Sunken Gardens recreation area. Pose beside its beautiful fountain, or get some shots of its elegant Greek-inspired “Wrestling Bacchantes” statue. Downtown Atascadero also has a huge amount of art galleries, boutiques, coffee shops, and restaurants, as well as a moving veteran’s memorial, and historic City Hall, which features a museum exhibit along with its magnificent architecture.

A little ways from the heart of the city, you can also take your Atascadero camper rental to the famous Hearst Castle, built by early 20th-century newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. This castle is opulence taken to the extreme. Spanning 127 acres and including tennis courts, a movie theater, an airfield, and once the world’s largest private zoo, the Hearst Castle housed some extremely well-known celebrities in its heyday. Guests included Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Clark Gable, Charles Lindbergh, and the Marx brothers.
